Bel Ami’s Kristin Scott Thomas to emcee Cannes

PARIS — Kristin Scott Thomas will take center stage as mistress of ceremonies for the Festival de Cannes’ 63rd edition, festival organizers said Monday.

The British actress, who now also boasts a French nationality and resides in Paris, will reprise her 1999 role to host the opening and closing ceremonies. She will kick off the festival on May 12 by welcoming Tim Burton and his jury to the stage at the Palais des Festivals before returning on May 23 for closing night.

This year, Scott Thomas was nominated for a Cesar award for best actress and a BAFTA for best supporting actress for her role in Sam Taylor Wood’s recent Sundance 2010 title “Nowhere Boy.” She is currently shooting Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s “Bel Ami” opposite Robert Pattinson and Uma Thurman in the story based on the Guy de Maupassant novel.

The internationally renowned actress succeeds 2008 and 2009 master of ceremonies French comedian Edouard Baer. Fest director Thierry Fremaux will announce the titles for this year’s festival on Thursday at a news conference in Paris.

Kristin Scott Thomas is a great actress. I just saw her in a French movie called ‘Il y a longtemps que je t’aime'(I’ve loved you for a long time, it’s the title of a popular song) and she was just amazing. She can bring lots of emotion to her roles… I’m very pleased that she’ll be in this movie with Rob.

Kristin Scott Thomas is one of the best actresses in the world. She is inteligent, beautiful, discreet, extremely talented. I love her so much. Rob is lucky to have the privilege to work with such a great actress, so experienced as her. I hope she has enjoyed to work with him too and that he has learnt a lot.
