Greetings limo riders. I hope you’re hungry! We’re making a pit stop for lunch today at the luncheonette. Eric is craving a chopped liver sandwich! Care to join?
This time on the Packer Portfolio, I’ve chosen to have a little fun with a setting in the story where quite a few plot points take place. Mid-way through his day, after finding the ever elusive Elise in the book store, Eric drags his wife across the street for a quick lunch. Seated at the cramped counter, they share a rare personal and sexually-charged conversation and get to know each other a little better.
He held her hand and they moved single file through groggy traffic to the luncheonette across the street. A man sold watches from a bath towel spread across the pavement. The long room was thick with bodies and noise and he pushed past the take-out crowd and found seats at the counter.
Eric seems pleased enough with his chopped liver sandwich. Pleased enough to carry it out of the restaurant with him. I’m not sure Elise is as fond of her duck consomme with an herb twist. I suppose it is a gamble to get the soup of the day…
She held the soup spoon above the bowl, motionless, while she formulated a thought.
“It’s true, you know. You do actually reek of sexual discharge,” she said, making a point of looking into the soup.
“It’s not the sex you think I’ve had. It’s the sex I want. That’s what you smell on me. Because the more I look at you, the more I know about us both.”
Of course their discussion of sex, the lake, smelling of sex, planetary weight principles and underground bookstores is interrupted by a public demonstration. Rats…we’ll have to save that for another day 😉
Until then, what do you think? What would you order? Can you hear all the people around you, cramped into the small space on their lunch break? Would you get cold slaw or chips with your sandwich? Dill pickle?
The setting of this part of the story isn’t nearly as important as the activities that take place inside, but it’s fun to imagine. We’ll have to stop off for breakfast one day. Their breakfast special look delicious…
