Many of you may remember our sneaky glimpse of the Cosmopolis branding, which we found hidden on set in June. After we did some research, we found that not only was the Cosmopolis title incorporated onto a manhole cover, but a New York manhole cover. I was so excited to see that they made the title treatment something symbolic to the film and also that they did something so unique to New York.
When I investigated a little more, I discovered that major cities have their own distinctive manhole covers. In most cases, it shows the city name and where it was forged. I thought this was pretty nifty, considering the nature of what lies beneath. (ew…)
After I made this discovery, I started looking around when I was out and about. The Chauffeurs and I started taking photos of interesting manhole covers when we could find them. This got me thinking…
Why just the Chauffeurs? Why not everyone in the limo?
Since times on the Cosmopolis front are a little slow, we decided to start a new weekly feature that involves all of YOU. I’m very excited about it! Without further ado let me introduce all of you to…
“Steam came venting from a manhole through a tall blue stack, the most common sight, he thought, but beautiful now, carrying the strangeness, the indecipherability of a thing seen new, steam heaving from the urban earth, nearly apparitional.”
So, what does Manhole Monday mean? It’s easy! Any time you’re out and about and see a manhole cover, snap a picture and send it to us! Each Monday I’ll compile them in a collage for everyone to see.
To kick off the first Manhole Monday, I’ve made a collage of all of the covers the Chauffeurs have snapped on their travels. What do you think?
To send us your photos, you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and put “Manhole Monday” in the subject. If it’s easier, you can send us a tweet @cosmopolisfilm. Be sure to use #MM in your tweet! Don’t forget to tell us the location of your photo – city, state, country, etc. We won’t put your names on the pictures, but we want to know where your photos are from!
I am VERY excited about this new project and can’t wait to hear from all of you. You wait, once you start looking for manhole covers…it’s hard to stop. Tell your friends! I bet most people don’t know the intricacies behind the worn covers littering the streets.
I look forward to seeing your photos! See you next Monday!
